What are Mycorrhizal Fungi/ Mycorrhizae?

Mycorrhizae” literally means “fungus” – “root” and describes the mutually beneficial relationship between the plant and root fungus. These specialised fungi colonise plant roots in a symbiotic manner and extend far into the soil. Mycorrhizal fungal filaments in the soil are truly extensions of root systems and are more effective in nutrient and water absorption than the roots themselves. More than 95 percent of terrestrial plant species form a symbiotic relationship with beneficial mycorrhizal fungi, and have evolved this symbiotic relationship over the past several hundred million years. These fungi predate the evolution of terrestrial plants, and it was the partnership with mycorrhizal fungi that allowed plants to begin to colonise dry land and create life on Earth as we know it.

The mycorrhizal symbiotic relationship centres on the plant’s ability to produce carbohydrates through photosynthesis and share some of these sugars with the fungus in return for otherwise unavailable water and nutrients that are sourced from the soil or growing media by the extensive network of mycelial hyphae produced by the fungus. It’s a two-way relationship of sharing resources between two species, thus a classic symbiotic mutualism. Mycorrhizal fungi rely on the plant, and the plant’s performance and survival are enhanced by the fungus.

About our Mycorrhizal Fungi/ Mycorrhizae

Suspended powder mycorrhizal blend consisting of 9 species of endomycorrhizal fungi, 10 species of ectomycorrhizal fungi, 2 trichoderma species, and 12 beneficial bacteria species well-suited to a variety of soils, climates and plants. About 95% of the world’s plant species form symbiotic relationships with at least one of these types of symbiotic soil fungus. These beneficial fungi greatly increase the effective rooting area of plants, thereby enhancing plant growth, vigour, and tolerance of environmental extremes.  This formula contains mycorrhizal propagules, which colonise roots and extend into the surrounding soil forming an essential link between plants and soil resources. Increasing the rooting area allows improved access to water and nutrients, promoting plant quality and crop performance. Also included are a blend of specially formulated amendments, as well as Trichoderma and beneficial bacteria.

Our huge Brush Box tree had lots of dieback and looked sad. The tree surgeon told us the tree would benefit from the application of Fungi fertiliser. I am amazed at the results. The tree canopy is now growing thick and luscious after a few weeks. I think it has saved our tree. Thank you. (Before and after photos provided)

Perfect start for my roses

I will be planting some bare rooted roses from David Austin. The Uk website recommends add mycorrhizal fungi to the roots. The big hardware and local nursery had no idea or ant products. Nourisme organics has always had great service.

We're glad to hear our mycorrhizal product was perfect for your roses! We're here to help and provide great service. Happy gardening!
