Clinically proven: Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis
One of the world's most studied probiotic strains. May support gastrointestinal function and immune modulation across multiple peer-reviewed trials.

Clinically proven: Lactobacillus acidophilus
Well-documented benefits for intestinal microbiome balance, lactose digestion, and immune support.

Traditional culture: Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus

Traditional culture: Streptococcus thermophilus
Drives rapid acidification, contributes to creaminess, and works synergistically with L. bulgaricus.

1) Heat your fresh milk
Heat 1 L of full-fat organic cow's or goat's milk to 80°C (do not boil) and hold for 10 minutes. Cool to 42°C. This step can be omitted by using UHT milk.

2) Add the culture
Stir in the contents of one 1g sachet until fully dissolved.

3) Ferment
Pour into a yoghurt maker (the Reuter-i is ideal) and incubate at 42°C for 6 to 24 hours. The longer the fermentation time the sourer the flavour and more lactose will be removed. Around 10 hours is suitable for most people.

4) Chill and re-culture
Refrigerate for 2 hours to set. Reserve 4 tbsp to start your next batch — repeat at least 6 times before using a new sachet.

Clinical Studies

A large number of clinical studies and scientific publications indicate that the Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis, and Lactobacillus acidophilus probiotic strains used in this yoghurt starter culture –  may have beneficial effects regarding the gastrointestinal and immune areas*.

Why is this starter more expensive than other brands?

Most commercial starters are 90%+ filler — maltodextrin, dextrose, or lactose — making pure probiotic content tiny despite the low price. This culture is 100% pure live bacteria with two clinically validated strains at meaningful CFU counts. When you factor in re-culturing up to 6 times per sachet, the cost per litre becomes excellent.

Can I use it without a yoghurt maker?

The culture requires a stable fermentation temperature at 42°C. A dedicated yoghurt maker (such as the Reuter-i) is strongly recommended to maintain consistent heat. Improvised methods — such as a warm oven or insulated thermos — can work but may produce variable results.

Can I use plant-based milk?

No it is not suitable. We have a Vegan Coconut Starter culture which can be used for all nut based milk products.

How long does the sachet last?

Refrigerated: use by the best-before date on the pack. Frozen: shelf life extends to 2 years. Store frozen if you are not using immediately.

When does Nourishme Organics ship live cultures?

Good but expensive

I love the NourishMe products although I am yet to try the Natto and Tempeh cultures. The customer service is very good. However, I find the cost of the probiotic yog product a little high, particularly when you add the postage.

Thank you for you feedback. Most yoghurt starters contain an extremely high amount of filler eg Maltodextrin, Dextrose, Lactose etc which make then seem cheap. Our Probiotic Starter Culture has a very high cfu count at 10 billion, is 100% pure bacteria with 5 strains including 2 clinically proven probiotic strains BB12 and LA5. Additionally you can use the yoghurt you make as a starter for at least 6 times before using a new packet, making the cost in use phenomenal.
