What is Milk Kefir Probiotic Drink?

Milk Kefir is a fermented milk drink that originated in the Caucasian Mountains near Turkey, where it was used for centuries as a healthy drink. Kefir is traditionally made with milk kefir grains. Kefir has the texture and consistency of thin drinking yoghurt, with a yeasty, slightly tart flavour and creamy mouthfeel.

How to Make Milk Kefir

Simply add 1 tsp (5g) of fresh organic milk kefir grains as purchased to 250ml ml organic milk and produce 1 cup of milk kefir every 24 hours. Instructions and ongoing support are included with the purchase.

Storage of Milk Kefir 

 you are not making milk kefir you can store milk kefir grains in a refrigerator in milk for up to 2 weeks. For long-term storage, milk kefir grains can be stored in a freezer for up to 2 years. After freezing, milk kefir grain may take up to 4 batches before returning to original potency.

Disappointed

The reason for three stars and not one is that they have now contacted my with my concerns that the kefir was not edible due to an extreme high yeast smell and flavor. They have given me some things to try to save the grains and reduce the yeast overload. If these things work I will update my review.

It's important to note that yeast is a natural part of the milk kefir culture and plays a role in its fermentation. However, we understand that a balanced flavour is key, which is why we've provided guidance on how to shift your kefir to be more bacteria-dominant for a milder, creamier taste. Strong grains

I admit was a bit worried when nothing happened after couple of days, so I put them on a heating mat at about 24 degrees, and they bounced into life strongly now I,m thinking about how to slow them down as there is seperation in less than 24 hr turnaround.

Didn't work

Unfortunately the grains failed to produce before, I made two attempts within the week after recieving them. I have made kefir before. Not sure why, but perhaps because during shipping they are not shipped in any insulated packaging and the packet says to keep refrigerated? It's a shame, I paid extra for the expedited shipping as suggested.

Please note that milk kefir is a wild fermentation subject to seasonality and weather.
Additionally, it does take up to 6 batches for the grains to fully acclimatise to their new environment.

TIPS for MILK KEFIR FERMENTING:

For the first 3 batches, you can use 125ml of milk instead of 250ml
Every time you walk by the ferment, give it a gentle shake to mix the grains and milk
Use full cream milk, preferably Jersey milk or A2
Keep in a warm spot in the kitchen
You can leave it for up to 3 days to ferment before straining and changing milk
The kefir is ready when it has a yeasty, bready, cheesy, or sour taste. It does not need to be thick or fizzy — simply sour to your liking
Grains will only begin to grow after they mature and fully acclimatise to your environment
Using our Milk Kefir Premix will help the grains grow
